STEM OPT Extension: What International Students Should Know

Rahul, US Students Visa May 19, 2025 6 min read

If your degree is on the STEM list, you may be able to work for three years after graduation instead of one. Here is how the extension works.

For many international students, OPT is the bridge from school to a real career. Standard OPT gives you up to 12 months of work after you graduate. But if your degree is on the STEM list, you may add another 24 months, for a total of three years. That extra time can change everything.

What is the STEM OPT extension

STEM stands for science, technology, engineering, and math. If you earn a qualifying degree in one of these fields, you can apply to extend your OPT by 24 months beyond the first 12. Three years of work experience gives you a real shot at building a career and lining up longer term options.

Who can apply

  • You hold a degree in a field on the official STEM list.
  • You are already on standard OPT in good standing.
  • Your employer is enrolled in E-Verify.
  • You and your employer complete a training plan on Form I-983.

Why the extra time matters so much

Three years is enough time to grow from a new hire into a valued team member. It also gives you more chances at the H-1B lottery, and more room to start a green card path like EB-2 NIW. In short, the STEM extension buys you time to build a future here.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Filing late. Apply before your current OPT ends, not after.
  • Skipping the I-983 training plan, which is required.
  • Working for an employer that is not in E-Verify.
  • Letting your work reporting slip, which can put your status at risk.

The STEM extension is a great chance, but the details matter. We help you check if your degree qualifies, file on time, and keep everything in order with your employer. Reach out and we will map your OPT and STEM timeline with you.
